National Fellowship honour for Professor Graham Reed of the ORC

Professor Graham Reed, Deputy Director of the ORC and Professor of Silicon Photonics, has been made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the latest tranche of elections to the Fellowship announced today.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is the national academy of engineering of the United Kingdom which uniquely brings together the country’s most eminent and distinguished engineers of all disciplines.

On receiving acknowledgement of his Fellowship, Professor Reed said: "I am delighted and honoured to be elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to find extremely talented people to join my group, and I see this as recognition of the contribution of the entire group, past and present. The group is stronger today than it has ever been, and I see us continuing to make a significant contribution in the future."

Graham has carried out award winning work in Silicon Photonics for more than 25 years, and is acknowledged as one of the pioneers in the field. His work has been widely adopted by industry, and he has receive worldwide acclaim for technical contributions and international leadership roles.

Professor Sir David Payne, Director of the ORC commented: “Graham is acknowledged as the individual who initiated the Silicon Photonics research field in the UK, and is particularly well known for his work on silicon optical modulators. He and his team designed the first depletion modulator, which is now an industry standard.

“Having filed over 14 patents and published more than 350 papers in the field, he is both respected and admired around the world.”

Graham will be formally admitted to the Fellowship at a New Fellows Briefing and receive his Fellowship scroll at the New Fellows’ Briefing and Dinner in October this year, to be held at the Royal Academy of Engineering headquarters in London.
